Frequently Asked Questions
When can I apply?
Applications will be accepted online starting December 16th. The last day to apply is December 31st, 2019. Interviews will occur Mid-January.
When will I be notified of acceptance decisions?
Candidates will be notified of decisions the week of February 3rd. Once notified, accepted candidates will have two weeks to confirm enrollment.
Why would I have to job shadow in other departments that don’t seem to be connected with my position?
A company with as many moving parts as Blount needs to have leaders who have a broad understanding of the whole company. Doing the 8 rotations throughout the program will position you to be a strategic leader within Blount.
I didn’t get accepted – now what?
We can only accept a select few people to the program each year. If you did not get accepted this year, you are more than welcome to apply next year. In the meantime, you can take initiative to work on your career development by contacting your supervisor and a member of Blount’s Learning & Development department to begin developing your skills and career path now.
What is 360 degree feedback?
The 360 degree assessment tool used to get a full picture of an employee’s performance and position in the company. A variety of people that you interact with are asked to complete an evaluation of you – subordinates, coworkers, supervisors, etc. – and the composite data is shown to you for development purposes. You will also meet with a personal coach who will help you to understand and interpret the feedback.
How much of a commitment is the program?
The LDP is intended to grow you professionally and you will get out of it what you put in. That being said, it is expected that accepted candidates attend all scheduled trainings and events for the program. During job shadowing assignments, the commitment may vary. Some departments may ask you to be more heavily involved during your assignment with them than others. Development plans will be individually designed for each person in the program so job shadowing assignments with heavy commitment will not be scheduled during busy times in your own department.
What are the requirements to apply?
To be considered for admission, applicants must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience working at Blount and be in or on track for a leadership role. Applicants also must have the ability to think strategically and creatively, and be a life-long learner.
What is the benefit of going through the program?
While there is no guarantee for an immediate promotion, the program is designed to enhance your business acumen and better position you for future leadership oppurtunities.
Will I have a mentor?
Yes, you will be assigned a mentor that you will meet at the Program Kick-Off Meeting. Mentorships are overseen by the Director of Corporate Coaching and Mentoring.
What kind of activities will I be expected to participate in?
There will be a number of teambuilding and community service activities that LDPs will be expected to participate in. In the past we have volunteered at Sharing the Harvest Community Farm, completed Scavenger Hunts and Escape Rooms. These will occur about every 6 months.
How often will I meet with the program coordinators and the other LDPs?
You will be expected to attend quarterly meetings. These meetings will be a time to reflect on your rotations and connect with your fellow LDPs. Occasionally a senior leader may sit in.
What kinds of trainings will I participate in?
The specific trainings will depend on the individuals who enter the program. These trainings will provide learning opportunities on subjects such as leadership, management, communication, emotional intelligence, etc.
Will there be a closing ceremony?
Upon completion of the two year Leadership Development Program, LDPs will be expected to prepare a 10-15 minute presentation capturing their experiences in the program, the lessons they’ve learned, and the skills they’ve developed. This will be presented to senior leaders of the company.
I applied last year and didn’t get in. Am I able to apply again?
Yes! Due to the involvement of the program, we must keep each class year rather small so not all who are qualified can be accepted each year. We encourage you to apply again. Please note that you will start the application process from the start and participate in the full interview process again.
